Herpes are any one of several inflammatory virus diseases of the skin characterized by clusters of vesicles, which are small, short-lasting, irritating and sometimes painful fluid-filled blisters on the skin and mucous membranes. Type 1 infections tend to occur in the facial area, particularly around the mouth and nose; type 2 infections occur in the genital area.
